We
are in the middle of the Crane
season, so far about 50-60.000 European Common
Cranes are around the Hortobagy National Park, which is their
major stopover en route to their wintering grounds toward
Central Africa.
By
my opinion the annual crane migration of October and the
rut of Red Deers in September are the two major highlights
of the hungarian wildlife, in general. Hundreds of foreign
birdwatchers are here to see them, just like hunters do
for the deers.
One of my bigest dream is to follow the Cranes to the "Sudd"
of Southern Sudan, where they overwintering together with
Demoiselle's Cranes. One of my favourite childhood reading
was the excellent work, "With migratory birds to Africa",
written by the swedish Bengt Berg around the 30's. He also
published hundreds of amazing, still spectacular B&W
photos about this magnificent natural opus.
Of
course this time of the year is also excellent to observe
other magnificent birds, incl. Great Bustard, Imperial
Eagle, Sakr, Stone Curlew, Dotterel, Long-eared
Owls, Barn Owl, to mention a few, and also you can
see such insect-rarities like Fisher's Estuarin Moth,
or Banded Darter.
Here
are some pictures taken with staff photographer Laci Novák
from the last year! And what about this year regarding pictures???
Its far better! But we all need surprises! :))

crane tours!
