"Horn
of Africa" tour incl. Yemen, Socotra, Djibouti, Somaliland
and Ethiopia.
"Dear Friends,
Our goal is to see all the safely possible endemics of the
Horn of Africa, incl. Yemen, Socotra Island, Djibouti, Somaliland
(safe part of former Somalia, used to be British Somaliland)
and Ethiopia. We expecting to see 60-70 endemics plus hundreds
of other residents and palearctic migrants. Expected tour
list is about 650. I also will run a "pelagic-scuba"
extension for those who love seabirds and scubadive. The extension
will take place on the southern Egyptian' Red Sea or in Sudan
in co-coperation with Cassiopea
Safaris.
Notes: Due to travel warnings and instability
of some region of the itinerary we decided to postpone our
tour considerably, and also we are waiting the outcome of
some other operators to make final decisions.
Date:
March, 2012.
Transport:
new Toyota Land Cruisers, in every car 1 driver plus 3 birders,
which give us a space for luggages and considerable comfort.
At Yemen we will use a minivan, because we just simply doesn't
need 4x4s.
Costs:
Self-payed, I will organize everything ahead, we share the
coast of car rental and everybody pays for his accomodation
and meals.
We
will need open-jaw tickets, I think the best approach is to
use Cairo as a hub, fly to Saana with Egyptair, also fly out
with Egyptair from Addis. Egyptair is very flexible and if
we have to change airtickets by any reason, they usually do
it free, no extra charges.
1./
We should start the tour in Yemen, where we need about a week,
plus I plan 1-2 extra days in search of Slender-billed Curlew,
which has a big potential to find somewhere on the coast of
Yemen. To see the Arabian-peninsula endemics plus many palearctic
vagranst are easy.
2./
After we fly to Socotra for 3-4 days, to see all the endemics
too. All of them easy except the bunting, but with a day of
effort we will have it. Than back to Saana.
3./
From Saana we fly to Djibouti for three days to see the francolin,
etc. Than we should go the Somaliland and give a try for all
the possible endemics which are in the safe areas. Warsangli
Linnet, Little Brown Bustard, etc.
4./
Than we cross to Ethiopia where the 4x4s will waiting for
us at the border, and we will do the usual circle to see all
the endemics. Fly out from Addis.
5./
If there is any interest, I am glad to organize a pelagic
extension to Egypt or Sudan aboard the 5-star luxury (but
extremely good price...) diving boats, M/S Cassiopea and M/S
Andromeda. Excellent opportunity for scuba too!
Regards,
Lajos"
